Safe Ship Recycling

Global Recognition in Ship Recycling Excellence

Safe Ship recycling: GGEPIL since the year 2005 has been operating and maintaining the Integrated Common Hazardous Waste Treatment, Storage and Disposal Facility. GGEPIL operates, maintains and develops treatment facilities on behalf of Gujarat Maritime Board (GMB) for facilitating the collection, transport, treatment and disposal of hazardous, non-hazardous and municipal solid waste that is generated from the ship dismantling yard, situated at Alang-Sosiya Ship Breaking Yard (Asia's largest ship breaking yard). GGEPIL provides expert services to sellers and buyers of ships destined for dismantling inclusive of safe removal of asbestos materials, recycling and recovering resources as well as detailed assessment of ships with respect to hazardous waste for getting beaching permission.

GGEPIL made history at the Alang‑Sosiya Ship Recycling Yard by setting international standards for safe asbestos management during the dismantling of iconic vessels like the Clémenceau and Blue Lady. Our pioneering work, backed by specialized training from the French Navy, positioned India’s ship recycling sector on the global stage. This achievement drew visits from international delegations, leading shipping companies, and dignitaries, underscoring GGEPIL’s reputation for tackling complex waste management challenges with world‑class expertise.

Ships with Asbestos need to be recycled with far more caution

Continuous exposure to asbestos can cause problems not just to the marine life forms but also to the people aboard the ship. Asbestos has been banned from being used in ships from the past three decades. But the ships in which asbestos had been used initially need to be recycled.
